Anthony D. Bilich

Born and raised in the Bay Area, I completed my education
in 1973, earning a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree
from California State University, Hayward. My area of specialization
was finance. After receiving my MBA, I spent two years on the East
Coast where I lived in Bryn Mawr, a small town just outside of Philadelphia,
PA. During this period, I enjoyed developing accounting and finance
courses for the American College of Life Underwriters, assistant
teaching at Drexel University and extensive textbook writing in
the area of personal finance (Family Finance published by Little
Brown). However, after two winters on the East Coast, I realized
I had left my heart in California. I moved back to the Bay Area
soon thereafter.
In 1976, I began my career in real estate when I accepted
a position with a small real estate developer as a financial analyst.
Approximately a year and a half later, a small group of us tested
our entrepreneurial abilities by forming a new real estate development
company. It was quite successful and acted as a steppingstone to
the formation in 1979 of A. D. Bilich, Inc., also known as Preferred
Financial.
At the age of thirty, I borrowed 4.3 million dollars
for the development of an 84-unit condominium complex located in
the heart of Silicon Valley. To this day, I claim that I earned
my PhD in real estate by successfully completing this project during
one of the toughest interest rate climates ever. I borrowed the
money at prime + 1.75% and then watched the prime rate quickly climb
to over 20%. While I had many potential buyers, the problem was
that many could not qualify due to the record high mortgage rates.
So to make a long story short, I became involved in the mortgage
industry by originating no cost loans for my buyers.
Since then, I have stayed mildly active in real estate
development and commercial property ownership, but by far the main
thrust of my business activities remains the residential mortgage
business. Over the years, Preferred Financial has grown to be one
of the largest mortgage companies in the Bay Area, with a client
base of nearly 10,000 and loan volume of well over $5,000,000,000.
For the most part, these staggering numbers are the result of satisfied
clients continuing to refer others to our company.
